E-cigarettes Banned at Singapore Airport, Even for Transit Passengers
Singapore has significantly hardened its stance against e-cigarettes, with new, stricter legislation taking effect on September 1, 2025. The updated law now explicitly prohibits the possession of e-cigarettes and other vaping devices throughout the city-state, and this ban extends to foreign passengers who are merely in transit at the internationally acclaimed Changi Airport.
Travelers are strongly advised to leave their e-cigarettes at home. Under the new rules, which build upon a 2018 ban, any vaping devices found during security checks will be automatically seized. Offenders face a hefty fine of S$700 (approximately US$520). For repeat offenders, the consequences can be more severe, including a potential ban from re-entering Singapore. For long-term pass holders, permits may be revoked. French diplomatic services have also issued alerts regarding these new penalties.
The regulations are even more stringent for vaping liquids containing etomidate, an anesthetic substance now classified as a Class C controlled drug by Singaporean authorities. Possession of such products can lead to arrest and severe penalties, including caning. Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam has warned that traffickers of these substances could face even harsher punishments, potentially mirroring the severe penalties for other drug trafficking offenses.
Authorities are reinforcing that tourists and visitors, even those just passing through Changi Airport, should not travel to Singapore with an e-cigarette in their possession, whether in carry-on or checked baggage, as airport controls are being strengthened. Airline Aircalin also reminds passengers that due to their batteries, vaping devices are formally prohibited in checked luggage on flights.
