Singapore Fines 2,700+ People for Vape Offences Since Sept 1
Since tougher penalties for vaping-related offenses came into effect on September 1st, Singapore authorities have fined more than 2,700 individuals. In a joint statement, the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) revealed that between September and November, 2,710 people were caught and fined. Of these, 2,453 were general vape offenders, while 257 were found possessing vapes containing etomidate, a potent anesthetic.
The crackdown includes mandatory rehabilitation for certain offenders. 162 individuals caught with etomidate-laced vapes have been placed on rehabilitation programs, and a 16-year-old repeat offender became the first person admitted to a drug rehabilitation center for etomidate abuse. Additionally, 18 repeat general vape offenders were placed on the Health Promotion Board’s rehabilitation program. Failure to attend these sessions can lead to prosecution and jail time.
Enforcement at borders remains strict, with 46 people caught smuggling vapes at checkpoints and 26,000 vapes seized. The HSA has also charged ten people under the Misuse of Drugs Act, including for trafficking etomidate pods. Online enforcement has led to the removal of over 830 listings and action against social media users posting vaping content.
Under the new regime, third-time vape offenders face prosecution and fines up to $2,000. Etomidate offenders face even stiffer penalties, including fines up to $10,000, jail terms, and caning for importers and sellers. Authorities urge the public to use voluntary disposal bins and seek help through the free QuitVape program without penalty.
