Aiken County Restricts New Vape Shop Locations
Aiken County, South Carolina, has unanimously approved new zoning restrictions limiting where vape and smoke shops can operate within unincorporated areas. The ordinance, driven largely by requests from local school principals concerned about youth access, mandates that new shops must be located at least 2,000 feet away from schools, daycares, parks, youth centers, churches, and other existing vape shops.
County Council Chairman Gary Bunker clarified that while existing businesses will be grandfathered in, the new rules aim to curb the accessibility of these products to teenagers. “This is to try to limit the accessibility of these products to teenagers and high school students,” Bunker stated. The ordinance also updates the definitions of vape and smoke products under county zoning rules.
Enforcement will be handled by code enforcement officers, with violations classified as misdemeanors. These restrictions apply specifically to unincorporated parts of the county, meaning city limits may have different regulations.
