Tahiti Proposes Tax Hikes on Tobacco & Vapes for 2026
The initial 2026 budget for French Polynesia (Tahiti) includes several proposed tax measures aimed at increasing revenue, with significant hikes targeting imported tobacco and vaping products. The changes, outlined by Minister of the Economy Warren Dexter, signal a move towards higher costs for these items.
Under the proposed changes to taxation applicable to imports, customs duties on all tobacco products and vaping liquids are set to increase from 10% to 15%. Furthermore, the customs duties on the importation of electronic cigarette devices themselves are slated to double. In addition to import duties, the budget calls for a 4% increase in the excise duty applicable to traditional tobacco products. Crucially, it also proposes the creation of a new, similar excise duty specifically for vaping liquids, which are currently excluded from this type of tax. These measures are part of a broader budget that introduces various fiscal reforms, including changes to VAT and tourist taxes.
