Turkey Prepares Stricter Regulations to Ban E-Cigarette Advertising
The Turkish Ministry of Trade is preparing to implement comprehensive new regulations aimed at combatting unfair commercial practices, with a specific focus on banning advertisements for electronic cigarettes. This initiative is part of a broader effort to update the Regulation on Commercial Advertising and Unfair Commercial Practices, addressing rapid technological changes and evolving consumer habits.
According to information obtained by Anadolu Agency (AA), the draft regulation, which was submitted for sector feedback last month, proposes treating “electronic cigarettes” as a distinct category separate from traditional tobacco products. While regulations already exist for tobacco advertising, this specific categorization aims to enforce a more targeted and explicit ban on e-cigarette ads. The primary goal is to protect consumers, particularly young people, from harmful habits.
The proposed changes also address modern marketing techniques, including advertisements created via artificial intelligence and those promoted by social media influencers. The draft mandates that any use of AI or digital characters in ads must be clearly disclosed. Furthermore, strict rules on targeted advertising are planned, prohibiting profiling based on sensitive personal data and banning targeted ads directed at children.
The Ministry is currently evaluating feedback from industry representatives before finalizing the regulation. Once enacted, these measures are expected to significantly tighten the control over how vaping products are marketed in Turkey, closing loopholes in digital and influencer-based promotion.
