UK Vape Ban Undermined: 6.3 Million Devices Thrown Away Weekly
One year after the UK implemented its ban on disposable vapes on June 1, campaign group Material Focus has revealed that 6.3 million devices are still thrown away weekly. This persistent waste crisis is driven by a lack of accessible retail recycling points and is directly fueling a dangerous surge in bin lorry fires.
Under UK legislation, retailers who profit from selling vapes are legally required to provide in-store take-back recycling points. However, many are failing to do so or failing to publicize the service, creating a “retailer recycling lottery” for consumers trying to dispose of devices safely.
Research commissioned by Material Focus highlights the difficulty consumers face when attempting to recycle vapes at various retail locations:
| Retailer Type | Percentage of Customers Unable to Find Recycling Points |
|---|---|
| Local Convenience Stores | 63% |
| Supermarkets | 43% |
| Specialist Vape Retailers | 33% |
This lack of infrastructure has severe consequences for waste management. Biffa reports receiving over 200,000 vapes every month in mixed recycling collections, where they pose a severe fire risk when crushed. Meanwhile, 47% of vapers remain entirely unaware that these devices can even be recycled.
To combat this, Material Focus and the Local Government Association (LGA) are calling for stricter enforcement on retailers and demanding that producers remove the word “disposable” from packaging. Advocates argue that year two of the ban must shift focus toward producer responsibility to stop local taxpayers from bearing the cost of dangerous fires and contaminated recycling.
