UK Crackdown on Illegal Vapes: QR Codes and £10k Fines
The UK government is set to unveil a series of robust measures to combat the booming trade in illegal vapes, including the introduction of mandatory digital stamps with QR codes. These stamps will allow consumers and enforcement officers to easily verify the authenticity of products. The initiative, expected to be announced in Wednesday’s Budget, aims to disrupt criminal networks and protect the public from unregulated, potentially dangerous e-cigarettes.
Under the new rules, rogue traders caught selling unlicensed vapes could face fines of up to £10,000 and potential prison sentences. The Border Force and HMRC will be granted enhanced powers to seize illegal products at the border. Legitimate businesses can begin registering for the digital stamp scheme from April next year, with it becoming compulsory by autumn. A six-month grace period will be allowed for selling unstamped stock.
These measures complement the existing Tobacco and Vapes Bill, which seeks to ban vape advertising and regulate flavors and packaging. Hazel Cheeseman, CEO of Action on Smoking and Health, welcomed the move, stating that aligning penalties for illegal vapes with those for tobacco sends the right message. Industry representatives, including the Independent British Vape Trade Association, also praised the “concerted effort” to stamp out illicit trading that has damaged the reputation of the legitimate vape market.
