UK to Let Locals Communities Block New Vape Shops
The UK government, under Prime Minister Keir Starmer, is set to unveil a major shake-up of town planning laws this week, designed to give local communities greater control over their high streets. The new plans will empower residents and local councils to block the opening of new vaping and gambling shops, addressing concerns about the proliferation of these businesses in town centers.
Steve Reed, the new Housing, Communities and Local Government Secretary, stated the initiative is about “supporting those communities to take back control, restore pride in the places where they’re living, and give them the power and resources to make their areas more successful.” The government is also looking to accelerate ways for communities to take ownership of empty shops to prevent high streets from being dominated by rows of vape shops, betting shops, and barbers.
This move follows a recent study by Health Equity North, which found that the number of vape shops on England’s high streets has increased by almost 1,200% over the past decade, with a higher concentration in deprived areas. Labour MPs like Dawn Butler and Andrew Pakes have been campaigning on this issue, arguing that current laws, such as the 2005 Gambling Act, prevent councils from refusing applications for betting shops, leading to their over-saturation in poorer areas. The proposed reforms aim to change this, giving local people more say in the makeup of their high streets.
