Uruguay Bill Proposes Smoking & Vaping Ban in Parks, Bus Stops
A new bill introduced by Uruguayan Deputy Álvaro Dastugue seeks to prohibit smoking and vaping in public squares, parks with children’s play areas, and bus stops. The proposed legislation, presented to the Chamber of Representatives’ Public Health and Social Assistance Commission, aims to “protect the population from involuntary exposure to smoke and aerosols derived from the consumption of tobacco products, marijuana, and electronic vaping devices,” according to the text accessed by Montevideo Portal.
The bill specifically targets two main types of outdoor public spaces. Firstly, it would ban smoking, vaporizing, or keeping lit any tobacco, marijuana, or electronic vapor devices in plazas and parks equipped with children’s games or recreational areas. Secondly, the prohibition would extend to bus stops, public transport shelters, waiting areas, and a radius of at least 10 meters around them.
Deputy Dastugue emphasizes that this is a matter of public order. The text outlines that infractions will be sanctioned based on their severity, ranging from warnings to fines, with specific criteria and amounts to be established in future regulations. This move represents a significant expansion of smoke-free zones in Uruguay, targeting outdoor areas frequented by families and commuters.
