Belarus to Ban Vape Ads & Expand Smoke-Free Areas
Belarus is moving towards stricter tobacco control regulations, with a proposed bill aiming to ban the advertising of electronic smoking devices (vapes) and expand the list of places where smoking is prohibited. Volha Bartman, head of the Public Health Department at the Republican Centre for Hygiene, Epidemiology and Public Health, announced that the draft law is currently undergoing interagency review.
The new legislation seeks to close existing loopholes; while advertising for e-liquids and tobacco products is already restricted, the ban would now extend to the devices themselves, which Bartman noted are currently widely advertised. Additionally, the bill proposes to protect non-smokers by banning smoking and vaping on the porches of apartment buildings and dormitories.
These measures come amidst concerns over rising youth usage. Recent data indicates that 15.1% of adolescents aged 13-15 use vapes, with usage slightly higher among girls. The highest share of nicotine product users overall falls within the 19-29 age group. Discussions are also ongoing at the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) level to amend technical regulations for tobacco products.
