Brazil: City of Americana Proposes Public Vaping Ban
A new bill has been introduced in the Municipal Chamber of Americana, Brazil, to prohibit the use of electronic cigarettes (vapes, pods) in all municipal public places, including both open and enclosed collective use environments. The proposal, submitted by Councilor Wagner Rovina, will be voted on in upcoming legislative sessions.
The bill specifies that the ban would apply to locations such as squares, parks, leisure areas, municipal public schools, libraries, and sports facilities. It also extends to privately-owned but publicly accessible collective spaces like restaurants, bars, cinemas, and common areas of condominiums. Rovina justified the measure by highlighting the uncontrolled sale of these products by street vendors at large events in Americana and the concerning rise in their use by minors.
He cited health risks associated with vaping, including cardiovascular diseases, nicotine addiction, and lung injuries. The proposal follows the lead of the neighboring municipality of Limeira, which approved similar legislation in April 2025. While Brazil’s health agency, Anvisa, has banned the commercialization and import of e-cigarettes since 2009, their consumption has grown significantly, prompting local legislative action.
