Alabama: City of Cullman Approves Local Vape Tax
The City of Cullman, Alabama, has approved a new local excise tax on vaping products, a strategic move to retain revenue within the city ahead of a new statewide vape tax set to take effect in 2026. The Cullman City Council suspended its typical rules to take immediate action and adopt the ordinance.
A new state law, sponsored by Representative David Faulkner, will impose a 10-cent-per-milliliter charge on vaping products. Under that state structure, 50% of the revenue would go to the State’s General Fund, with counties and municipalities each receiving 25% based on population. However, the state law includes a provision allowing local governments to implement their own vape taxes and keep 100% of the revenue locally, provided their ordinances are adopted by an October 1, 2025, deadline.
Seizing this opportunity, Cullman has implemented its own 50-cent-per-milliliter tax on all vaping products sold within the city limits, ensuring the entirety of these newly generated funds will remain in Cullman for local use.
