Juul Stops Selling Mint Pods: Why It Happened
Juul Labs has officially halted the sale of its mint-flavored pods in response to new research indicating that mint is the top choice among high school vapers. This move follows the company’s earlier suspension of fruity flavors like mango and cucumber, leaving only tobacco and menthol options available as Juul attempts to address the youth vaping epidemic and cooperate with regulators.
Data Drives the Decision
The company’s decision was triggered by the release of the Monitoring the Future study and the FDA’s National Youth Tobacco Survey. These reports painted a clear picture: mint is not just popular; it is the number one flavor choice for 12th and 10th graders and the preferred option for “heavy” teen users.
Juul Labs CEO K.C. Crosthwaite stated, “These results are unacceptable,” emphasizing the need to reset the vapor category and earn back public trust by combatting underage use. This follows Juul’s previous suspension of fruity flavors like mango, creme, and cucumber in October.
What’s Left on the Shelf?
With mint gone, Juul’s offerings are now significantly stripped back. Consumers will only find three options:
- Virginia Tobacco
- Classic Tobacco
- Menthol
Is Menthol the New Loophole?
Despite this concession, health activists remain skeptical. Organizations like the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids argue that the distinction between “mint” and “menthol” is negligible to young users. Critics assert that retaining menthol allows Juul to continue selling a fresh, minty flavor under a guise that sounds more adult-oriented, potentially failing to curb youth appeal effectively.
