New Jersey: Sea Bright Bans New Tobacco/Vape Stores and THC Product Sales
The seaside town of Sea Bright, New Jersey, has enacted sweeping legislation that prohibits the establishment of new tobacco and vape stores and bans the sale of all THC products within the borough. The new ordinance, which took effect in August, was adopted by the Borough Council following weeks of public consultation and debate.
Sea Bright’s mayor, Brian Kelley, cited the protection of public health and “preserving the character of our small beach town” as the primary reasons for the ban. This move aligns Sea Bright with other Jersey Shore towns that have implemented similar restrictions. The legislation addresses growing concerns over the health effects of vaping, particularly its appeal to younger people, and the significant environmental cost of discarded single-use vapes, which contribute to e-waste and litter.
While some raised concerns about the economic impact on potential businesses, health officials praised the decision. Michael Balka, health officer for the Jersey Shore Regional Health Commission, recognized the action as “a proactive step toward protecting public health — especially among youth and vulnerable populations.” The ordinance reflects a local government’s decision to prioritize community health and character over the potential tax revenue from these product sales.
