UK: Stratford MP Demands Ban on Colorful Vape Displays to Protect Kids
Stratford MP Manuela Perteghella has challenged the UK government to tighten retail display rules for e-cigarettes to prevent children from falling into nicotine addiction. While backing the Tobacco and Vapes Act 2026, the Member of Parliament warned that current laws leave loopholes that allow bright, eye-catching branding to target youth on local high streets.
Perteghella has tabled an Early Day Motion calling for regulations that require shops to keep vaping products out of sight, matching the strict rules already applied to tobacco sales. She noted that constituents frequently report seeing vapes displayed at children’s eye level in local convenience stores, often positioned next to everyday confectionery.
“No child should be encouraged into a new and harmful addiction simply by walking down their local high street,” Perteghella stated. She pointed to kid-friendly flavors such as “Cotton Candy,” “Gummy Bear,” and “Unicorn Shake” as prime examples of products marketed inappropriately to minors under the age of 18.
Beyond the health risks of youth nicotine addiction, the MP highlighted the physical dangers associated with disposable devices. Lithium-ion batteries in these products present a severe fire hazard when stored or discarded incorrectly.
During a recent visit to the Biffa waste management site in Stratford, Perteghella witnessed a collection truck catch fire due to an improperly discarded vape. Though waste crews extinguished the fire safely, the incident underscores the safety risks these devices pose to local infrastructure.
The MP is advocating for a complete ban on vape marketing in shop windows, alongside tighter restrictions on vape-related branding and terminology on storefront signage. Additionally, she urged the government to review fire safety regulations for retailers, particularly those operating within historic listed buildings.
These proposals aim to position vaping strictly as an adult smoking cessation tool rather than an appealing consumer product displayed in plain sight of children.
