Malaysia: Sarawak Drafts Law for Total Ban on Vape Sales and Use
Sarawak’s Ministry for Women, Community Wellbeing and Family Development has drafted legislation to completely ban the sale and use of vaping devices and electronic cigarettes. This move addresses the rising prevalence of vaping among school-aged children across the state.
Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah announced that the State Cabinet has agreed in principle to the new law. However, the cabinet has directed the ministry to consult key enforcement agencies before formal implementation.
Current consultations involve:
- The Royal Malaysia Police
- The Sarawak State Health Department
- Local municipal authorities and community stakeholders
Fatimah stated that a total ban is necessary to curb vaping, which has spread rapidly among students. Data indicates that the majority of teenage vapers in Sarawak are aged between 13 and 17. The ban will roll out in phases across the state to ensure systematic enforcement.
The announcement was made during a children’s cancer awareness event in Kuching. Fatimah also pledged ministry support for cancer prevention and educational programs led by non-governmental organizations, including the Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society.
