Thailand to Tighten E-Cigarette Ban Amid Vaping Surge
The Thai government is planning to impose stricter controls on e-cigarettes (vapes) following a reported fivefold increase in the number of users over the past three years. Despite a long-standing legal prohibition on vaping in the country, the number of vapers aged 15 and over has allegedly surged from 78,000 in 2021 to over 400,000 in 2024, according to data from the National Statistical Office.
This alarming trend has prompted the government to call for a revision of the tobacco law, specifically targeting e-cigarettes and other new nicotine products. New regulations are being drafted to better control the production, importation, use, sale, and advertising of these products across both physical and online channels. The government also plans to launch a public awareness campaign about the dangers of vaping, especially aimed at minors, and aims to combat political interference from the tobacco industry.
Health officials are particularly concerned about the impact on youth. The Ministry of Public Health has noted cases of severe pneumonia among young vape users, some requiring respiratory assistance. To protect young people, the new measures will likely target aggressive online marketing, attractive device designs, and appealing flavors. Various ministries, including Finance, Digital Economy, and National Education, will be consulted, and the Royal Thai Police will be involved in enforcement. A report on the new strategy is expected within a month.
While enforcement of the existing ban has been inconsistent, this renewed government focus signals a “new turn of the screw.” Travelers and residents who use e-cigarettes are warned to be cautious, as authorities may be stepping up surveillance and penalties.
