Turkey Plans to Completely Ban the Sale of Cigarettes
Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), alongside the Ministry of Health, is drafting legislation for a phased, complete ban on cigarette sales. This drastic development occurs amidst the nation’s broader push to align with European Union standards, directly resulting in one of the world’s strictest tobacco control frameworks.
The country has a long history of aggressive anti-tobacco legislation. Current laws already enforce plain packaging and strict prohibitions on vapes, advertising, and indoor smoking or nicotine consumption.
Authorities are now developing further restrictions targeting public spaces and school zones. With health experts estimating that tobacco-related illnesses cause an average of 300 deaths per day in Turkey, officials expect this impending total ban to drastically reduce mortality from cardiovascular diseases, cancer, strokes, and passive smoking.
