Ireland Disposable Vape Ban Passes Oireachtas: What to Know
Irish authorities are preparing to enforce a nationwide ban on disposable vapes following the successful passage of new legislation through both Houses of the Oireachtas. The bill now awaits the signature of the President to officially become law.
To prevent immediate financial disruption for businesses, the law establishes a six-month lead-in period. This transition window allows retailers to sell off their remaining inventory before health enforcement officers begin active monitoring and compliance checks.
Junior Health Minister Jennifer Murnane O’Connor welcomed the legislative milestone, noting that single-use vapes directly target young people. The ban is part of a broader government strategy to curb youth nicotine addiction. In addition to banning disposable devices, the legislation restricts vape flavors exclusively to tobacco, removing the sweet and fruit-flavored options that attract younger users. It also prohibits the sale of non-tobacco nicotine products, such as nicotine pouches (snus), to minors under 18.
Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill and Minister Murnane O’Connor stated that these measures aim to reduce the visibility, appeal, and accessibility of nicotine products to children. Newly appointed health enforcement officers will oversee compliance once the six-month grace period expires.
