Newark, Delaware Passes Zoning Law to Restrict New Vape and Tobacco Stores
The Newark City Council approved the zoning change following recommendations from the city’s Planning and Development Department. Planners argued that the public health issues associated with nicotine products justify regulating these businesses under a separate classification from general and specialty retail.
Local officials highlighted a visible rise in the density of these storefronts. Councilwoman Corinth Ford noted that shops are opening too close to one another, particularly along South Main Street, and voiced support for a proposed 300-foot buffer to keep businesses apart.
Mayor Travis McDermott expressed support for tighter limits, citing concerns over youth vaping. McDermott suggested that the city should explore making the licensing process difficult enough to discourage new entries entirely, or consider an outright ban on new vape businesses within city limits.
While the council could not attach the 300-foot buffer or a total ban to this specific ordinance, members expect to debate these additional restrictions in upcoming sessions.
